The Brooklyn band plays it's own take on Amazonian Chicha: A delirious mix of Psychedelic cumbias, original tunes and chicha renditions of tunes by artists as varied as Satie, Ravel, Joe Dassin or Gershon Kingsley. Chica Libre's update of chicha should feel familiar to fans of Antibalas or Manu Chao: it is a modern, radical approach to classic 70's sounds. On their debut CD, Chicha Libre remain true to the original spirit of Chicha. They treat covers of classic Amazonian groups as well as their own compositions in very much the same way. Thick, funky Latin grooves and a heavy emphasis on vintage electric guitar and organ sounds.
Reviews:
Fans of The Roots of Chica: Psychedelic Cumbias from Peru, the stunning compilation that Barbes put out last year, should definitely check out this revival act, spurred by label owner Olivier Conan, who may do for this music what Antibalas did for Afrobeat'"not just expose it to a new audience, but help it develop further.
