Dropkick Murphys history with Woody Guthrie dates back decades, from covering "Gonna Be A Blackout Tonight" on their 2003 album Blackout, to using some of Guthrie's writing about Boston in their immortal hit "I'm Shipping Up To Boston". On their recent 2022 album, This Machine Still Kills Fascists, Dropkick Murphys crafted an entire record around the seminal American folk icon, bringing Woody Guthrie's perennial jabs at life-many of which are from the 1940s and '50s-into the present, with the resulting music eerily relevant to today's world. Okemah Rising is second and final installment of this collaboration, and the band bring it home with a bang. Whereas the goal of This Machine Still Kills Fascists was to raise consciousness, Okemah Rising intends to raise the roof. It may have one or two tender moments, but all in all it's much more of a party. "Even a party record can have a message though and we've felt that over the last few months as we've played 'Gotta Get to Peekskill' and 'I Know How It Feels' on tour all over the world. Every night, when the audience is singing along with Woody's words, his steadfast defense of the working class, and his fight against social injustice and the abuse of political power comes across loud and clear. So as long as Dropkick Murphys are involved, Woody's message will always be heard."

Lucha, Y La Bamba's seventh album, is a thematic narrative that explores multiplicity - love, queerness, Mexican American and Chicanx identity, family, intimacy, yearning, loneliness. Born out of isolation during the COVID-19 lockdowns, the album reflects the artist's struggles and growth as a person and artist. The album is a battle cry to fight in order to be seen and accepted, and is a collection of sonically sprawling and bold tracks that document the parallel trust the artist has built with herself to allow the songs to guide how they should be sung or sound.

2x GRAMMY-nominated band Rival Sons have announce details of their anxiously awaited new full-length album, DARKFIGHTER, which his set to arrive worldwide March 10th. Produced by longtime collaborator and multi GRAMMY Award-winner Dave Cobb, DARKFIGHTER is led by the explosive single Nobody Wants to Die, is accompanied by an Eli Sokhn directed music video streaming now on Rival Sons YouTube channel. The track notably marks the first new music from Rival Sons since the release of 2019s FERAL ROOTS, which earned the band two GRAMMY Award nominations.Regarding Nobody Wants to Die, vocalist Jay Buchanan shares, You live your life knowing that the sword of Damocles is hanging over your head by a thread. Youre fully aware of the impermanence of your existence, but you cant think about it all the timeor itll fuck your life up. I used to work in a mortuary as a service advisor for a few years, driving and opening the hearses. Id attend three funerals per day. Sometimes, they would be filled over capacity. Other times, it would just be me, a priest, and a hole in the ground. It doesnt matter who you are; the great equalizer is coming. I was thinking of this because the music sounded like pursuit. Elaborating on the genesis of DARKFIGHTER, Buchanan notes, DARKFIGHTER represents the cultural mitosis of isolation, the Pandemic, and the national fabric of the US getting looser and looser. When I say Cultural Mitosis, there are lines being drawn constantly. Were so divided, and you cant step over the lines without offending someone. It certainly informed my writing. We recognized a responsibility to put a good word on peoples ears so theres a good word coming back on their tongues too. We missed the joy of the live show and that magical interaction. When it was taken from us, that made me want to sing about topics that were important. There are strong themes on this record of loss of identity, preservation of joy, and beholding light and shape again. Lead guitarist Scott Holiday added, Records are a healthy form of escapism. I hope this one takes you as far away as possible. Our intent was to create a cinematic body of work. As soon as the doors shut behind you, youre enveloped on the ride. This is the sound of us really coming into our own. Weve gotten further from our influences and gotten closer to what we are. DARKFIGHTER sounds like the Rival Sons.

Several times, as I listened to M. Wards Supernatural Thing, I asked myself what year itwas. Was it 1952, and was I listening to a track from the Harry Smith Anthology? Was it1972, and was I eavesdropping on the recording session for After the Gold Rush? No, its 2023, and M. Ward is one of the special contemporary artists who invite suchquestions. Ward has clearly mastered the whole vocabulary of American popular musicand made serious decisions about how to employ it for his own ends. What Ward shareswith Harry Smiths artists and Neil Young is a context of musical and human values:authenticity and intimacy. Supernatural Things original songs sound freshly pulled fromthe ground, with a little earth sticking to them. Wards lyric delivery has that slight rawnessthe ear loves, and his voice has quiet dignity and great tenderness. Supernatural Thing isan open-hearted, inviting album.

The albums guest stars First Aid Kit, Shovels & Rope, Scott McMicken, Neko Case,Jim James, others enliven the album with surprises. On Too Young to Die, the womens voices in First Aid Kit spread a light frosting over the melody, and their Beach Boys-like chorus on Engine 5 makes the song sound like an instant hit. Eight of the albumsten songs are Ward originals. Theres an unusual Bowie choice, I Cant Give EverythingAway from Blackstar, and a live rendition of Daniel Johnstons Story of an Artist.-By James Cushing

Both as a solo artist and as one-half of She & Him, M. Ward became one of the definingvoices of the American indie landscape in the 2000s, earning fans and critical acclaimfor his distinctive brand of breezy West Coast Americana which pulled from folk, country, blues, pop, and experimental indie rock elements. Ward established himself with warm,analog-minded releases like 2003s Transfiguration of Vincent and 2006s Post-War before joining forces with singer/actress Zooey Deschanel to form the highly successful indiepop duo She & Him in 2008. Over the following decade, Ward split his time between projects, releasing a 2009 album with indie supergroup Monsters of Folk, several high-profilealbums with Deschanel including She & Hims Columbia-issued 2014 set Classics, andcritically acclaimed solo releases like 2009s Hold Time, 2012s A Wasteland Companion, and 2018s What a Wonderful Industry. Ward kicked off the next decade with a deeplyatmospheric set called Migration Stories and a Billie Holiday covers album Think of Springmost recently.

Damn, Feelings, the debut album from Chayla Hope, is a distillation of what makes pop such a potent force, conjuring images of everything from 80s arcades and present-day queer clubs to golden hour convertible rides and marathon dive bar karaoke sessions with friends youd kill for. Love in Lo-Fi recalls the bubbly, communal synth-pop of MUNA, Long Way channels the golden age of 00s, R&B-infused radio pop and Tear My Heart Out harkens back to the vibrant pulse of indietronica. Youll also hear the 80s synths and funky rhythms of New jack swing as well as the bold production and teary-eyed joy of 2010s dance-pop, but the common denominator is always Chaylas rousing vocals, alternating between cool and collected pop anthems, naked balladry and low, raspy fireworks. Pressed by the artist herself at Gotta Groove Records, where she worked for many years, this is the first time Wax Mage Records' coveted bespoke creations are available at indie retailers nationally.
