When the idea of recording a 4th album came up (for the second time), American Football knew things were going to get darker. After touring a year's worth of sold-out 25th Anniversary shows around the world and releasing a covers album (featuring Iron & Wine, Ethel Cain, Blondshell & more), the quartet of Mike & Nate Kinsella, Steve Lamos, and Steve Holmes, linked up with producer / engineer Sonny Diperri (My Bloody Valentine, M83, Kurt Vile) to record what would become their most substantial record to date. "There are two versions of this album," says Hollow Hand's Max Kinghorn-Mills. "But there's only one that exists."

Kinghorn-Mills is reflecting on a period when he was at something of a crossroads. He had written songs for his forthcoming fourth album, but after coming back off tour, something needed to change. �When I listened back to where I�d left the album, it wasn't exciting enough for me,� he says. �I was like: that's not really what I want to do anymore.�

Since releasing 2023�s Your Own Adventure � which drew acclaim from the likes of Mojo, Uncut, and Shindig! � he found himself touring and collaborating with a variety of other artists. Hollow Hand became the house band for Caitlin Rose on tour, while Kinghorn-Mills was also collaborating with Aoife Nessa Frances and playing in her touring band. There was countless exposure to incredible Irish bands along the way, and then came a sold-out European tour with Hollow Hand supporting MJ Lenderman. When Kinghorn-Mills came back he was bursting with a newfound creative zeal. �Seeing all these different types of bands play, it just made me reflect,� he says. �It makes you step up your game and it creates a feeling that you want to do better. I don't want to ever feel like I'm going through the motions so I decided to start again.�

Hollow Hand has always been a vehicle for Kinghorn-Mills� songs, and it remains so, but having felt the spark and connectivity of being around more bands, he decided to change tack. �The way I've made albums previously has usually been huddled away in the tradition of a bedroom producer,� says Kinghorn-Mills. �But with this one I expanded my horizons and it made me realise there's so much more to playing, and being in a band, than just recording the songs.�

Along with Oliver Newton (drums) and Leo Clarke (bass) they got together in their new studio space in Brighton and tracked the songs live as a band. �With three of us being involved from the beginning, and all invested in it together, it feels like a group effort, which is a new thing for us,� Kinghorn-Mills says. �Our studio became really important as a creative space and, while it�s not Abbey Road, we were really able to up the production value.�

The result is a record in which you can feel the fun coursing through it, as the zest of a reconfigured and tightly-knit group of musicians burns as brightly as the beautifully melodic and unique songs that they�ve carved out. �It feels closer to the goal of sounding like a band playing live than anything else I've made before,� says Kinghorn-Mills. �I guess I needed that difficult time to find myself because I feel completely rejuvenated after making this record.�

But fold your cards every time he goes all in across a table from you, or swallow as fact every nugget of wisdom he sharpens into verse or stretches into a yarn without catching the gleam in his eye or wry tell between the lines, and odds are you�ve been played.

But honestly, that�s all just part of what makes Hubbard so damn fun.

�You know, a lot of artists when they put out a record, they go, �This is the best record I�ve done up to this point,�� the Americana legend considers sagely after a pause when asked how to best sum up Reel 2 Reel 4 Real, his 20th album in a recording career stretching back to the mid-70s. �But I�m not going to say this is the best record I�ve done. I�ll say it�s the best record I�ve ever heard.�

No matter how many awards and Hall of Fame inductions others might honor him with (he�s a member of both the Austin Music HOF and the Texas Heritage Songwriters HOF), Hubbard never swaggers or sings his own praises without keeping his tongue planted firmly in cheek. Michigander � the acclaimed indie rock project led by Nashville-based singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Jason Singer � has announced his sophomore album Over Before You Know It, out Friday, July 31 2026 via Totally Normal Records / Thirty Tigers.

Jason Singer thought his 2025 full-length debut as Michigander would change everything about his life and work. During the prior decade, after all, Singer had cobbled together the start of a successful career as an incisive and infectious songwriter from the stuff the music industry considers scraps�a half-dozen singles and a quartet of EPs, collectively suggesting he was one of indie rock�s sharpest new tunesmiths. The debut album Michigander felt only like the upper lip of the plateau Singer had been climbing for a decade already. So what, he wondered, was he supposed to do now? The answer that came back was obvious: Keep writing.

'Over Before You Know' It is the magnetic and relatable result of that work and the broad but detailed view from the top of that plateau. It marked his second and final project for the Beatles' label before signing with A&M Records. Co-produced by Preston and George Harrison, the album featured the first released versions of Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" and "My Sweet Lord," appearing two months ahead of Harrison's own recordings on his landmark triple album, All Things Must Pass. Preston's take on "My Sweet Lord" was issued as a single and reached #90 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1971, though the album itself did not chart in the US or UK. While commercially overlooked, Encouraging Words has since been praised by some critics as one of Apple's strongest non-Beatles releases. Sweeping Promises' introduction to the global punk underground was their debut album, Hunger for a Way Out, which ended up being one of the breakout successes in music during pandemic lockdown. Aethermead, the newest offering and 20th full-length album from Of Montreal, finds the band revisiting sounds from their early years, while still pushing artistic boundaries with their iconic style of pop & indie rock. Celebrated for their unique and prolific output, frontperson and primary songwriter / multi-instrumentalist Kevin Barnes recorded the album at Brooklyn's Honey Jar studios with audio engineer, Drew Vandenberg (Faye Webster, Toro y Moi), with basic tracking done live to a 16-track tape machine with Barnes' longtime live band. "I wanted to capture a quick moment together and to make on-the-fly, spontaneous creative decisions," says Barnes. "It felt very liberating and exhilarating to have to start and finish an album in a month's time." The result shimmers with indie pop elements of their 2004 release, Satanic Panic in the Attic, as well as the raw, live energy of 2013's Lousy With Sylvianbriar. With the dream ‘not to sprinkle world music around a rock festival, but to prove that these great artists could be headliners in their own right’, the three days and five stages played host to 60 bands from over 20 countries; a line-up that included The Drummers of Burundi, Pigbag, Salsa de Hoy, Simple Minds, Musicians of the Nile, Echo and the Bunnymen, Prince Nico Mbarga, Rip, Rig and Panic, The Beat and many more… “I remember this gig well,” says Peter Gabriel. “We played a mix of old and brand-new material. I would normally be very nervous about playing some of this stuff for the first time, however my mind was very preoccupied with the running of our very first WOMAD festival and the potential financial disaster that it was heading towards. Because WOMAD was unique in its focus on music and art from around the world, and mixing it with up with rock and jazz, no-one knew how many people might turn up and we had seriously overestimated our appeal. But those that had decided to check out WOMAD and its weird and wonderful lineup were open-minded, bold and curious - a great audience. It was a landmark and edgy gig for me both personally and musically and brings back lots of memories.” Across the three days ‘an evening concert series’ took place in the Showering Pavilion on the festival site. On the Friday night that concert featured Tian Jin (a song and dance troupe from China), Simple Minds and, with a ‘special festival set of non-album material’, Peter Gabriel. Live at WOMAD 1982 is a recording of that Friday night concert. The non-album material in question are seven of the eight songs that would make up the album Peter Gabriel 4. An album that wouldn’t be released for a further two months. On-stage, Peter is joined by David Rhodes (guitar), John Giblin (bass), Larry Fast (synthesisers). Jerry Marotta (drums), Peter Hammill (guitar, vocals) and “the wonderful Bristol-based drum and dance group,” Ekomé (drums, percussion). “We wanted to show that wherever you were born, whatever colour or language, whatever religious or sexual persuasion, powerful passionate and joyful work would have a warm welcome in WOMAD. At the beginning, most music industry professionals told us that we had no chance of making this dream work, we had all the wonderful naïve misguided optimism of the young, and were convinced that we would prove all the cynics wrong.
