Hardly Art

Colleen Green has always been cool, but didn't necessarily feel it. Too young to be free of insecurities but old enough to be sick of them. Five years and a new album later, we find her parsing out what it means to be grown-up. Burnt out on bad feelings and ready to have fun with melodies and beats, Green takes Cool to higher ground while keeping her lo-fi aesthetic intact.

The debut self-titled album by singer Jojo, originally released in 2004, features pop and R&B influenced tracks and vocal maturity well beyond typical thirteen-year-olds. Featuring the explosive single, "Leave (Get Out)," the platinum selling album debuted at number four on the Billboard 200, and established Jojo as a pop force for years to come.

Originally released in 2006, JoJo’s second album (at only 15 years of age), The High Road, features an eclectic array of styles, such as pop, alternative rock, and hip hop soul. The album’s lyrical themes showed off growing confidence in the young mega-star while slower tracks and a group of high-profile producers helped showcase JoJo’s superb vocal abilities.

While the pop-oriented tracks hint at sounds first explored on the Superchunk frontman’s 2015 album Non-Believers, McCaughan’s recent excursions down the rabbit hole of synthesizers and sequencers (resulting in an ambient project with Mary Lattimore) add a particularly crystalline spaciness akin to The Durutti Column and Bowie’s Berlin trilogy.

Includes "Let's Change The World," delivering a welcome dose of hope and optimism, the reggae-infused "Just That Way," the Country-esque "Coming Undone," Starr's first collaboration with Linda Perry who wrote and plays on the track alongside Trombone Shorty. Also, Ringo rocks his version of "Rock Around The Clock" revved up by the unmistakable Joe Walsh on guitar.

Republic

The songs on Bill chronicle ideas, challenges, and questions Shatner’s confronted all along the way. The resulting work blends long-form autobiographical poetry and prose, music, spoken word, performance art, and philosophical exploration. Toggling between passion and despair, reflection and yearning, this collection explores his life journey during a pivotal and chilling moment of history.

Throughout his time with massive bands like Alter Bridge and Creed - and most-recently his solo band, Tremonti has never strayed from his love of writing memorable songs with strong inspiration at their core. With Marching In Time, the band looks to build upon this trend while exploring their love for searing heavy music, drawing from current events throughout the last year to form the basis of each colossal track.

Produced by Gary Katz (who worked on all of the original era Steely Dan records), The Nightfly was a critical and commercial success with popular singles like “New Frontier” and “I.G.Y.” This new live release sees the album performed in its entirety, in order, by Steely Dan, or ‘The Steely Dan Band’ as they tend to be referred post Walter Becker’s 2017 death.

On his debut album, the South Carolina native has formed his own sense of unique musicianship—incorporating self-taught styles that fit each song rather than following conventional techniques With the fourteen tracks, including a special prologue featuring the voice of his late grandfather, McCall explores the balance of good and evil, destruction and healing and the importance of having faith in the darkest of times.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the landmark recording of this Cuban ensemble masterpiece, producer Ry Cooder and World Circuit's Nick Gold have gone back to the original tapes and into the archive to produce this Deluxe Remaster package, featuring previously unheard tracks from the original 1996 recording sessions, previously unseen photos, and new liner notes.

Unique Leader

Pittsburgh heavyweights' monumental fourth album, Absolvere, takes a dark conceptual journey into the realm of the human mind and the modern condition. With pulverizing production from Christian Donaldson (Shadow of Intent, Cryptopsy, Ingested), crushing riffs collide with insane drumming, all layered under explosive vocals pushed to the front.

Reading, Pennsylvania's Rivers of Nihil have never fit neatly into a box, but with 2018's Where Owls Know My Name, they transcended all labels applied to them. Returning in 2021 with The Work, they have forged further into new territory, delivering an album that is as cerebral as it is visceral, and that covers a staggering sonic range, definitively placing them in a category of their own.

New Release Round-Up 09-24-21

Quicksand - Distant Populations

Quicksand - Distant Populations - Epitaph
Distant Populations, just the fourth full-length album of Quicksand's career, comes as a comparatively swift follow-up to Interiors--which itself came a full 22 years after its predecessor, 1995’s Manic Compression. Critically lauded and deemed very much worth the wait, Interiors succeeded in reestablishing the band as the powerful and contemporary entity they had always been. Distant Populations has a punchier, more up-tempo sound than its predecessor; its 11 songs are concise, carved sonic jewels boasting not a single wasted note; and its raw power, its gripping lyricism, leaps out from the very first listening. It is a striking step up for the band.

Local Valley strikes a balance between stripped back arrangements— just Jose’s intimate vocal and exquisite nylon string guitar work— and tracks driven by groovy drum machine loops and other percussive elements. The 13 tracks invite us to look beyond our tribal instincts and explore our shared humanity and the scientific-based existential questions we face together on our quest to understanding.

In the Crockett tradition, Music City USA is as ambitious and ground-breaking as each piece of recorded music he’s put out so far. And it’s not just an album. It’s a double album of Charley Crockett originals, each song going the distance to further define this singer-songwriter-performer-artist who came out of the proverbial nowhere.

bLOW will bring you to the dance floor, or up your highway speed by ten or fifteen mph, but it’s also worth listening to in a more contemplative way. Most classic blues songs were written by more than one person over more than a few decades, and that’s what gives them their gravity. Colin has steeped himself in this tradition, via advice he got, at age eleven, from the legendary Howling Wolf.

'Don’t bore us, get to the chorus’ is a questionable nugget of wisdom which Chris Daughtry has frequently practiced. Yet on Dearly Beloved, Daughtry offers space for intros to build slowly, brooding over the arch of the narrative, eventually erupting into an array of blazing, arena-sized anthems and massive ballads that fill your entire consciousness.

Mild High Club makes a long-awaited comeback with Going Going Gone, the band's first solo album since 2016’s cult favorite Skiptracing. Eternal Blue is a masterpiece of modern heavy music; a record that twists and turns and sits long in your memory warranting listen after listen. Charley Crockett - Music City USA

Charley Crockett - Music City USA - Son of Davy
The album cover you’re looking at might lead you to conclude Charley Crockett is on one hell of a roll. You wouldn’t be wrong. Ten records in six years is some kind of prolific. The latest, a double album, suggests the artist has some songs worth paying attention to. It’s clear that he’s invested as much time in the studio, recording storytelling songs, and making storytelling videos, as he has barnstorming around the United States and Europe playing live shows.  Not bad for a thirty-seven-year-old late bloomer.

Aaliyah is the self-titled third and final studio album by the "Queen of Urban Pop." Originally released in 2001, the album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Standout tracks include "We Need A Resolution," "More Than A Woman," and "Rock The Boat."

If you could call out to your country, what would you say? Bibb has known many different Americas, the good, the bad and the ugly. But, just as the history of the United States has both light and shade, so does Dear America. It's a record that laces it's exploration of the nation's most poisonous issues with hope, love and a brighter road ahead. All is not lost, stresses Bibb, and neither are we -- the future is ours to write.

The ten pieces of Hey What—each built around their own instantaneous, undeniable hook—are turbocharged by the vivid textures that surround them. The ineffable, familiar harmonies of Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker break through the chaos like a life raft. Layers of distorted sound accrete with each new verse - building, breaking, colossal then restrained, a solemn vow only whispered.

The Golden Casket hovers in the liminal space between raw punk power and experimental studio science as frontman Isaac Brock explores themes ranging from the degradation of our psychic landscapes and invisible technology, to fatherhood. The twelve tracks behave like amorphous organisms, undergoing dramatic mutations and mood swings that speak to the chronic tug-of-war between hope and despair that plays out in Brock’s head.

KGLW

KGLW’s 18th studio album, Butterfly 3000, might be their most fearless leap into the unknown yet; a suite of ten songs that all began life as arpeggiated loops composed on modular synthesizers, before being fashioned into addictive, optimistic and utterly seductive dream-pop. It’s simultaneously like nothing they’ve done before, and thoroughly, unmistakably Gizz, down to its climactic neon psych-a-tronic flourish. This is undoubtedly their most accessible and jubilant album to date.

While tracks like “Half a Heart Keychain” and “Too Late to Write a Love Song” allowed Riddy Arman to heal, her debut LP is far from just a breakup album. Her songs are rooted in the poetic imagery of country life, from the beauty of its simplicity to the isolation and loneliness that can often overtake its inhabitants. With fierce honesty and a voice that immediately commands attention, Arman has proven herself as much more than a lone cowboy.
